A practical 5-week course designed to get an insight in to the world of songwriting. Tim Dalling inspires creativity with his wonderfully unique approach to writing, the universe and everything! Not to be missed
When Leonard Cohen said “If I knew where the good songs came from, I’d go there more often,” he hadn’t heard about Tim’s songwriting course at The Globe. If he had, he might have said “For new songs I just hang out with Tim on a Wednesday afternoon.” We’re not saying Leonard needed much guidance but we’re sure he would have been entertained and inspired. Tim’s course is now its sixth exciting term. People return again and again, not because they haven’t learned how to write songs but because they keep having fun doing all the exercises in singing, writing and playing.
So whether you are a seasoned songwriter who wants some revitalising or a curious beginner who doesn’t know where to start, please come along. You don’t need to play an instrument and you don’t even need to be a strong singer but you will be encouraged to sing and write. Each session is three hours in which exercises and games provide a creative platform to jump into your own personal songwriting world. A place to share, discuss, listen, write and play songs of all description. The essence of the group is finding the excitement and inspiration of a shared desire to create songs. Everyone’s contribution is valued and encouraged.
Over the five sessions we will explore the context of songs, techniques and the reason we make them. We will listen to each other. We will try exercises that push us into new ways of playing, listening and working together. There will be a mixture of creating individually and as a group.
Why would you want to do anything else on a Wednesday afternoon?
About the tutor
Tim Dalling is musician and performer who, over the decades of his work in theatre, comedy and music, has constantly written songs. They range from the delicate song-settings of poetry by Louis MacNiece and Julia Darling to weird and wonderful nonsense dance-songs about animals to his own personal and emotional autobiographical lyrics, witty political tub-thumpers and three, four and five part rounds. All the songs stem from a desire to celebrate people (and animals) and their lives. He has seasoned skills as a performer and creative-group leader.
