Song-Club
Are you now or have you ever been someone who writes songs? If not, have you wanted to?
Whether you are a seasoned songwriter who wants some revitalising or a nervous beginner who doesn’t know where to start, Song Club is for you. A place to share, discuss, listen, write and play songs of all descriptions. The essence of this five-week course is finding the excitement and inspiration of a group where people share a desire to create songs. Everyone’s contribution will be valued and encouraged.
Over the five weeks we will explore the context of songs and the reason we make them. We will discuss the structures of lyrics, chord patterns, rhythms, hooks and melodies. We will try exercises that push us into new ways of playing and listening and we will work together. There will be a mixture of creating individually and as a group.
For this fifth term of Songwriting sessions at the Globe, I am planning to develop the structure of the sessions to allow for more consolidation and development of specific songs from members of the group. While we will revisit some of the starting points , writing exercises and improvisations to build the new group, we will also spend more time helping each other to study, share and develop and perform our individual songs.
The first rule of Song-Club is ‘Have a Go!’
About the tutor
Tim Dalling is musician and performer who, over the decades of his work in theatre, comedy and music, has constantly written songs. They range from the delicate song-settings of poetry by Louis MacNiece and Julia Darling to weird and wonderful nonsense dance-songs about animals to his own personal and emotional autobiographical lyrics, witty political tub-thumpers and three, four and five part rounds. All the songs stem from a desire to celebrate people (and animals) and their lives. He has seasoned skills as a performer and creative-group leader.
About learning and participation at The Globe You will need to bring all the equipment you need including instruments, amplifiers (if required) and music stands.
Prices
The course fee is £120 for a 5-session term. You may also pay £30 per session.
There are some half-price bursaries available for adults aged 18-25 (please email learning@jazz.coop for details).
