Mastery of rhythm – one of the five parameters of music – is an essential component in any musician’s tool kit. The ability to ‘feel’ time, not count it; to play ‘outside’ of the meter; to understand cross rhythms, odd time signatures and note groupings; is arguably one of the
most important and least understood of the five parameters.
During the workshop we will focus specifically on aspects of rhythm and groove, feeling time and letting go of the reigns. Using transcribed solos from the greats: Miles, Wes, Coltrane, we will look at the rhythmic elements that make these truly inspiring improvisors and create techniques and exercises to develop these skills for ourselves.
