A practical 10-week course exploring the techniques employed by the great jazz musicians
Our long-running jazz improvisation course re-starts and as usual is led by Steve Glendinning, a superb guitarist who was a regular tutor at Sage Gateshead.
This course is for instrumentalists wishing to develop their skills in ensemble playing within a jazz context. Various standards will be explored with a focus on lead sheet interpretation, improvisation, accompaniment and the various roles within a large ensemble.
This is a practical course with an emphasis is on performance and ensemble playing, and various avenues of analysis, music theory and aural awareness will be a central part of repertoire learning.
The course will conclude with a performance at The Globe for the final session, which provides students with the opportunity to showcase the term’s endeavors.
No formal training or experience is required for the course, but students should have a good working knowledge of their instrument. While guidance will be given in relation to instrumental technique where appropriate, this is not an instrument specific course.
Prices The course fee is £120 for a 10-session term. You may also pay £15 per session (minimum payment £30).
There are some half-price bursaries available for adults aged 18-25 (please email learning@jazz.coop for details).
About learning and participation at The Globe You will need to bring all the equipment you need including instruments, amplifiers (if required) and music stands.
