Jazz North East presents…
Graham Hardy (Trumpet and Flugelhorn)
Thomas Dixon (Saxophone)
Andy Champion (Double Bass)
Emil Karlsen (Drums and Percussion)
A Tyneside based supergroup also featuring the Leeds based Norwegian Emil Karlsen on drums and percussion. With a dedication to free music this quartet has been put together by Jazz North East specifically for this concert, whilst some members may have previously worked with each other in respective projects, this unique quartet has never performed before, and promises for an evening of exceptional pure improvised music.
Graham Hardy
Trumpeter and Flugelhorn player Graham Hardy is a regular on the Tyneside scene, running his own Northern Monkey Brass Band and Mondo Trumpet, whilst also featuring in the John Pope Quintet amongst many more. His style is versatile allowing him to play across many contexts, but it is in fact his incredible solos in the John Pope Quintet that has inspired us to put together this particular free improvising Quartet.
Thomas Dixon
Thomas Dixon is a Newcastle based Saxophonist, DJ/Producer and bandleader. As a solo artist, he focuses on playing with atmosphere, textures, improvised melodies and found sounds to create soundscapes ranging from intimate to otherworldly. As well as being inspired by the radical free jazz records of the early 1960s, Thomas is also strongly moved by British club culture, and African township folk music, which can be heard clearly in his other musical projects: DILUTEY JUICE and Kancho Club. Inspired by his time in the ICP’s Dutch Improv Academy, Thomas founded and facilitated ‘Thursday Night Prayer Meeting’, which at the time was Newcastle’s only free improvised music session, and hosted players such as Joe Mcphee, Steve Noble, Dee Byrne and Mark Sanders.
Andy Champion
Andy Champion’s career spans 30 years, working extensively in the UK and Europe. An in demand bassist, Andy is equally at home performing straight ahead, contemporary jazz or free improv. Andy has performed with top names such as Bob Mintzer, Tim Garland, Jason Yarde and Andy Sheppard. As an improviser he has played alongside major international figures including Marc Ducret, Marilyn Crispell, Matt Maneri and Eugene Chadbourne.
Emil Karlsen
Emil Karlsen is a Norwegian improvising drummer currently based in the UK. Described as a “a real force on the UK improvised music scene”, he’s establishing himself working the span from free improvisation to free jazz. Occupied with the exploring timbral possibilities of the drum kit, he performs with Philipp Wachsmann, John Butcher, Phil Durrant and Maggie Nicols to mention some. Apart from being an active performer he’s central in the revitalisation of the historic Bead Records.
