This hands-on course is perfect for anyone wanting to learn the essentials of live sound engineering. Over the course of 5 weeks, you’ll gain the confidence to manage live sound in various venues and genres.
With friendly guidance, you’ll cover the fundamentals of microphones, signal processing, artist monitors, and audio routing. You’ll learn to work with both digital and analog mixing desks, and explore the creative decisions made by front-of-house technicians. Plus, we’ll share troubleshooting tips to help you stay prepared in any situation.
If you’re a musician, this short course will help you understand technical terminology, making it easier to convey your thoughts with sound engineers. By the end of the course, you’ll have mixed a live band yourself, with support from your mentor, and be ready to apply your new skills in the real world.
About your mentor.
David de la Haye’s career as a sound engineer began in Newcastle’s grassroots music scene, where he promoted experimental music and provided PA hire. He soon joined Newcastle University as Music Studio Manager, a role he held for 10 years. Currently, David holds a PhD scholarship in Music, focusing on the creative exploration of underwater soundscapes. Despite his academic pursuits, he remains active in the music industry, performing with various groups and working behind the mixing desk—both in the studio and front-of-house—in venues across the country.
