Born and raised in Newcastle upon Tyne and now based in North Yorkshire, Greg Genre is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and one-man band whose music lives deliberately outside the boundaries of any single genre. The name says it all: Greg Genre blends different styles and influences into something he describes simply as “the genre of Greg.”
Primarily performing solo with a loop station, Greg builds songs live, layering guitars, keyboards, vocals, electronic rhythms and other instruments to create a surprisingly expansive sound from a single performer. His recordings also bring together a close circle of collaborators, including lifelong friend and fellow Newcastle native John Atkinson on bass and Simon James-Coleman on drums and percussion, who has featured on Greg’s last four albums.
Musically, Greg Genre is an eclectic collision of indie, alternative, psychedelic, electronic and spoken word. Influences from the late 1990s and early 2000s – including Radiohead, Coldplay, Elbow, Blur and Keane – sit alongside the more experimental electronic worlds of Björk and Goldfrapp. The result can shift from intimate and gentle to rhythmic, euphoric and expansive, combining guitars, piano, synths, layered textures and live field recordings of birdsong and nature.
Beyond the music, Greg’s work is driven by an optimistic, spiritual and socially conscious outlook. His lyrics explore life, society, peace, love, nature and humanity’s place in the world, while his use of real-world environmental recordings creates a direct connection between his songs and the natural world.
Greg’s music has received airplay on BBC Introducing Newcastle and the North East, as well as BBC Introducing North Yorkshire and Humberside.
Every album release is also connected to a positive charitable cause. For his current work, downloads through Bandcamp and CD sales at gigs are supporting Medical Aid for Palestine, reflecting his belief that music can be a force for compassion as well as creativity.
Greg is currently developing two new projects: ‘You Are The Universe’, another loop-based album on which he plans to play every instrument, including drums, bass and handpan, and ‘Allow The Now’, a collection of meditative piano pieces featuring cello from his wife.
Ultimately, Greg Genre wants his music to leave people feeling uplifted, peaceful, connected and inspired – a positive antidote to the negativity and division of modern life, and an invitation to appreciate creativity, nature, one another and the beauty of simply being alive.
