Bebop isn’t just fast—it’s a sophisticated musical dialect.
This course is your roadmap to the lightning-fast rhythms, chromatic melodies, and dense harmonies that defined the genius of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie.
At much slower speeds, we will dissect the DNA of the greats, using one of the most iconic “contrafacts” in jazz history:’ Anthropology’: master “Rhythm Changes” and learn to navigate shifting harmonies.
During the session we will look at the musical parameters – melody, harmony, rhythm – separately, and in combination:
Rhythm: unlock the “bebop scale” and learn how to place accents that drive the swing with relentless momentum. Harmony: Decode the complex turnarounds and II-V-I progressions that make bebop the ultimate playground for improvisers.
Melody: break down these legendary lines to understand the melodic shapes and phrasing used by the masters and develop your own vocabulary from them.
