Jazz North East presents…
SLOTH RACKET (10th Anniversary Tour)
Sam Andreae (alto saxophone)
Cath Roberts (baritone saxophone and compositions)
Anton Hunter (guitar)
Seth Bennett (double bass)
Johnny Hunter (drums)
It’s quite a special concert for both Sloth Racket and Jazz North East this one. Formed by Cath Roberts, the band were originally put together following a commission from the first Jazz North East ‘Women Make Music’ series when Cath was approached by the organisation to perform on 12th April 2015 at Gateshead International Jazz Festival, The Sage. At the time Cath was effectively given a carte blanche for what she might like to do, and Sloth Racket was formed. Now they return to the North East for their 10th anniversary celebrations.
‘Watching Sloth Racket perform is a thrilling experience, conveying a palpable sense that the musicians are navigating the scores by the seat of their pants, making real-time group decisions that sculpt the compositions into unique shapes each time they’re played’ – Daniel Spicer, The Wire, December 2021
Sloth Racket is a band of improvisers from London, Manchester and Dundee. Baritone saxophone player Cath Roberts creates scores that form the skeleton of the music, and the band constructs a collective sound out of those pages in the moment. Since forming in 2015 they have toured regularly and appeared at numerous UK festivals. The band released their fifth album Organising Space on the Luminous label in 2022, and most recently the album ‘Ten Years of Live Sloths’ which contains one live recording from each year of the bands inception.
‘A full-strength blast of fire music.’ – Lee Rice Epstein, Free Jazz Collective ‘Mixing free improvisation and graphic scores, Sloth Racket produce sumptuous, mischievous music.’ – Antonio Poscic, The Quietus
