Musicians’ Workshops in the afternoon
Workshop 1A (1pm-2.30pm)
Ian Stephenson – Northumbrian Tunes from the Vickers Manuscript
Learn a tune or two from the famous North East tune book from 1880. We will work together to make a groovy arrangement and appreciate the incredible variety of music from this awesome old book.
All instruments welcome, tune players should ideally be intermediate level plus. We will mostly be working by ear but sheet music in concert pitch will be available.
Workshop 1B (1pm-2.30pm)
Rachael McShane – Find Your Folk Voice
The session will focus on singing in a folk style, looking at ornamentation, harmony and techniques that can be used for either group or solo performance. We will learn some folk repertoire in a friendly and relaxed environment with opportunities for solos from those who are feeling brave!
Workshop 2A (3pm-4.30pm)
Julian Sutton – Dance Music from Central France
We’ll look at some standard dance tunes (bourree, mazurka, shottische) from the Auvergne/Massif Central region, looking at melody, rhythm and harmony. For any instrument, intermediate level and above. We will mostly be working by ear but sheet music in concert pitch will be available.
Workshop 2B (3pm-4.30pm)
Rachael McShane – Focus on Fiddles
A session just for fiddle players, we will work on how to make tunes work well on the fiddle. We’ll look at how to get your bowing under control to make your playing feel more fluid as well as adding in some ornamentation to add some sparkle to your playing. Suitable for players who have a basic grasp of their instrument. Sheet music will be available.
There will be a break of approximately half an hour between workshops when refreshments will be served.
Proficiency: All that we ask is that you know your way around your instrument/vocal chords and are up for trying out something new. Ability to read musical scores not required.
Please note that we value traditional methods of learning music by ear. In some cases, notation will be offered in support of this method but please do not expect to be given notation in advance or for every piece.
We ask that participants bring acoustic instruments only. Participants must be 18 or over.
There are some half-price bursaries available for adults aged 18-25 (please email learning@jazz.coop for details before you book).
