Aonghus McEvoy (Guitar)
Ailbhe Nic Oireachtaigh (Viola)
Sean Maynard Smith (Double Bass)
David Lacey (Drums)
Aonghus McEvoy hails from Dublin, Ireland where he has carved out a niche for himself in the experimental world and beyond as a founding member of exploitation folk-rock group Woven Skull, and brutalist punk quintet Worst. He’s also renewed for playing the music of Cornelius Cardew with Rhodri Davis and others, or playing with the likes of Annette Krebs, Ludo Mich, Adam Pultz Melbye, Damo Suzuki and Tristan Clutterbuck.
In August, McEvoy released Under & Cracked on the great Austin, Texas free music label Astral Spirits. It’s McEvoy’s second album under his own name, but his first leading a group. And what a group it is, featuring a who’s who of the Dublin jazz/improv scene with David Lacey (drums), George Brennan (electronics), Ailbhe Nic Oireachtaigh (viola) & Sean Maynard Smith (bass).
Landing somewhere in the vast middle ground between improv, New Weird America, pysch rock and minimalism, Under & Cracked features three tracks with McEvoy’s steady & understated guitar leading the way. The unhurried and cyclical nature of the compositions leans heavy into minimalism and repetition. Never bubbling over, ”Night-Time Providence” sounds like a mash up Tony Conrad & Faust and Natural Information Society.
McEvoy’s group will perform an opening set of improvisations and drone-based material, and second set based on the album.
“The role of bandleader reiterates rather than dilutes McEvoy’s uniquely evocative guitar playing. Uniting with the ensemble to hit incredible bursts of free-rock intensity without losing control of mood or space for an instant.” Daryl Worthington, The Quietus
“Rhapsodic interplay between viola and guitar… The results are engaging and often haunting.” Andy Hamilton, The Wire
