“a work that focuses on the band’s musicianship and the strength of the compositions, while a real sense of spontaneity and enjoyment pervades the recording… Anderson’s tenor saxophone tone is rich and warm” – Bruce Lindsay, All About Jazz
“The album succeeds thanks to a combination of consistently excellent playing and intelligent and varied writing. An excellent example of how wide-ranging the contemporary saxophone quartet can be.” – Ian Mann, The Jazz Mann
“unmistakably British straightahead music, cleanly melodic in shape” – Nick Hasted, Jazzwise
“Current and mature ‘jazz’ music with a bright edge from Matt Anderson defines this collection, with fine playing from all concerned.” – Stan Sulzmann
London-based saxophonist and Dankworth Prize-winning composer Matt Anderson presents his third album, The Town and the City, which follows 2018’s Rambling. The title refers in part to the diverse influences on the music, such as from the whole spectrum of the jazz tradition and various rhythmic traditions from around the world, but also more pastoral, spacious and folk-influenced sounds. This reflects Matt’s upbringing in the rural North Yorkshire Moors juxtaposed with his love of jazz and experience of living in the urban melting pot of London. For this performance, he is joined by a cross-section of the finest Northern players, who have all been long-time collaborators in various projects.
The son of a music teacher and based in Leeds for a time, Matt has lived in London since 2015. Becoming part of the fertile jazz scene in the capital, he has since performed with artists/bands such as Greg Hutchinson (with the Jiannis Pavlidis Quintet), Ivo Neame, the Gareth Lockrane and Calum Gourlay big bands, Jamie Doe’s Magic Lantern and Hannes Riepler. He also teaches at Leeds Conservatoire and the Royal Academy of Music.
Pianist Jamil Sheriff has recorded and collaborated with many jazz artists and recorded four albums of his own music, each of which has received national and international accolades. Dave Walsh can be heard drumming in a variety of genres including touring with singer/songwriter Tom McRae, and is perhaps best known in the jazz world for his work with Stuart McCallum. Andy Champion is a familiar part of many ensembles in the North-East of England, playing double-bass with the likes of Zoe Gilby and Chris Sharkey.
The Matt Anderson Quartet have toured extensively in the U.K. as well as appearing at the Bimhuis, Amsterdam; Jamboree, Barcelona and Jimmy Glass, Valencia.
