Beccy Owen & The Refuge are an all-female collective led by ex-Joy Atlas front-woman and acclaimed singer/songwriter Beccy Owen. They released their debut album CHAOTICA in late 2019 on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. See the video and hear the new single‘ Safety First ’HERE.
Written and demoed between 2017 to 2019, CHAOTICA was originally intended as a laptop-based solo project, which would’ve been Beccy’s sixth solo record. However, it quickly became apparent that the music was crying out for company.
In the building of a band, first off Beccy invited producer and sound engineer Julie Bartley to be involved, swiftly followed by Beci Eden (drums), Fran Knowles (drums) and Katy Trigger (electric/doublebass). This dynamic trio form the band’s formidable rhythm section. The collective also encompasses Jenny Hoy (vibraphone & percussion), Jessie Howard (electric guitar) Gayle Roberts (strings) and Eliza Lawson as guest vocalist. The sum of these eclectic parts is a healthy dash of punk spicing mixed with earth-mother serenity
Previous iterations of Beccy’s music have won high acclaim over the years. Beccy has received radio play on BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio 3’s‘ The Verb ’and BBC Radio 4’s ‘Pick of the Week ’and has made live appearances on TV, including the BBC’s The Culture Show. She has played all the major festivals Beccy and has collaborated with and supported numerous world-class musicians, including John Grant, Nitin Sawhney, Maximo Park, Boff Whalley (Chumbawamba), Kate Rusby, and Bellowhead. In addition to her solo career and work with The Refuge, Beccy also makes theatre, directs Beccy Owen’s Pop-Up Choirs and is the patron of the charity Black and Blue, which supports domestic abuse survivors.
As a band, Beccy Owen & The Refuge draw on a mouth-watering range of musical styles and influences, melding them into a bold, hypnotic sound. There are times when hearing private ghosts spill out in song can leave a soul disquieted, but if you let this band reach out to you with their stories, their joys and heartbreaks, then you will feel your heart reaching out to theirs in return. CHAOTICA is a sophisticated and potent monument to the fluidity of trauma and triumph that will resonate with many listeners. The eight tracks are full-blooded, playful, weird, beautiful and decidedly jarring in places, and all the better for it.
In short, this music is full-blooded yet powerful in its vulnerability, and the album marks the first, bold steps of an exciting new musical crew. Seek them out on record, online and live – it is absolutely not to be missed.
