Luis Verde – alto sax
John Pope – bass
Abbie Finn – drums
Following his recent relocation to North East England, we are delighted to welcome this outstanding Spanish saxophonist and composer with his trio, to The Globe. For this gig, the trio will focus on the music of Thelonius Monk, with a contemporary perspective, exploring rhythmic, harmonic and structural possibilities, hoping to bring his tradition and his original songs together.
Luis Verde combines his career as an instrumentalist and composer with his role as a teacher at the new EMC superior school of music, as director of La Resistencia Jazz Ensemble (a contemporary jazz ensemble focused on collective exploration), and as president of the Madrid Association of Original and Improvised Music (Infinita). He established himself as a benchmark within the avant-garde of jazz in Madrid, at the forefront of Spain’s new and innovative jazz generation, after releasing his second album with the acclaimed label Fresh Sound Records, the personal and imaginative In Lak’ech Hala K’in (2015).
Vientos Cruzados (2018), his third work as a leader, was a profound critical and public success, winning the AIEnRuta-Jazz circuit in 2019 and being chosen by the AECID as the ambassador of Spanish music abroad. At the Norwegian Academy of Music (Oslo 2023), he successfully finished his master’s thesis about the implementation of improvisation as a structural part of compositions for large jazz ensembles.
As a freelance performer specialized in Jazz, Flamenco and Latin American folklore, Luis has toured, recorded and regularly shared the stage with artists such as: Moisés Sánchez, Mark Schilders, El Niño Josele, Henry Cole, Alain Pérez, Jerry González, Miron Rafajlovic, Ariel Brínguez, Borja Barrueta, Reinier Elizarde, Guillermo Mcgill, Marco Mezquida, Michael Olivera, Voro García, Rafael Águila, Javier Colina, Jorge Pardo, Marc Miralta, Marcos Collado, Jorge & Maikel Vistel, John Pope, Pablo M.
