Shunyata Improvisation Group play a series of concerts inspired by 7 Zen Art Principles.
Concert 4 Simplicity (Not complicated or gaudy)
Support: Mobius
This concert focusses upon the Zen art aesthetic of Simplicity.
“Simplicity and Repose are qualities that measure the true value of any work of art.” ~ Frank Lloyd Wright
“Out of clutter, find simplicity.” Albert Einstein
In Zen aesthetics Simplicity broadly suggests that high quality is achieved through omission and elimination of unnecessary material. The aim is not to ornament the essential but to let the essential speak for itself. In improvisation then it follows to contribute plainly and avoid any cluttering of the group sound.
The Aesthetics series of concerts focus upon the 7 Zen aesthetic art principles, taking a single principle as the focus for each concert. The Shunyata Improvisation Group will approach the 7 Zen aesthetic principles and the discourse about Shunyata in Buddhism as inspiration for our musical practice and stylistic considerations, providing some foundation stones to work from.
Each concert will relate to ideas of emptiness, change and impermanence as we seek to create memorable audience experiences by playing distinctly and quietly with space and restraint. We will provide the opportunities for the music to create within the audience a reflective meditative atmosphere.
In the summer of 2023, music created by Shunyata Improvisation Group especially modelled on the Zen art principles will be released on Wormhole World as a limited-edition CD and download. This will be an accompanying piece of work to the series of concerts.
We are privileged throughout the series to have permission to use images from the work of the artist Catherine Dee, https://catherinedee.co.uk/About
Möbius
We are delighted to be supported for this concert by Mobius, who with their soaring female vocal melody lines, grounded by sparse guttural drone, epitomise a focus on the essential.
James Watts – Vocals and Electronics, Skylar Gill (Vocals and Loops) use improvised layered and looped voice to build rich soundscapes. The largely unadorned voices, bar the use of the loop, yield something meditative and primal in nature.
Twelve small label releases
Prolific performers since inception in 2017 including The HUB festival, Cardiff, and It Came from the Sea II Festival.

This concert focuses upon the aesthetic Asymmetry; meaning avoiding uniformity and working with the irregular and incomplete.
“Uniformity of design was considered fatal to the freshness of imagination,” Kakuzō Okakura
“In everything, no matter that it may be, uniformity is undesirable. Leaving something incomplete makes it interesting, and gives one the feeling that there is room for growth.” Yoshida Kenkō
