Straight-Ahead, Hard-Bop and Beyond!
David Gray – Trombone
Paul Grainger – Upright Bass
Alan Law – Keyboard
Adam Sams – Electric Guitar
Michael Mather – Drum Set
As a graduate of Dr. James Birkett’s BMus in the North East, trombonist David has set out over the past decade to put his own stamp on the local scene and beyond in a variety of contexts.
The David Gray Flextet was devised to have an adaptable lineup, so as to realise a single musical vision across a number of settings. As a trombonist, David has a range of influences from J.J. Johnson and Fred Wesley, through the likes of Dennis Rollins, Carl Fontana and Wayne Henderson.
Backing David are local jazz stalwarts Paul Grainger and Alan Law, along with the effortlessly versatile Adam Sams and Michael Mather–both of whom are regarded very highly across many different music circuits.
The Flextet offers a diverse mix of strong grooves, Bop and Hard-Bop stylings and Straight-Ahead Jazz, with distinct takes on standards, some lesser-known tunes and originals in their overall repertoire. Their inaugural set aims to reflect this ethos with a selection of tunes to run the gamut.
